Grain Sack Chairs

What is it about upholstering in old grain sack that's caused such a stir?

Maybe the rough, ancient surface is so unlike what we traditionally use for covering furniture.

Or, maybe it's the unexpected stripe.

Or, maybe it's the fact that NONE of these woven pieces are ever wide enough to do the job and force the upholsterer to become a magician.

In any case, our love for these old, hard-working textiles elevates them to the status of living room masterpieces that can hold their own next to an important painting, an elegant case piece or a hearty stone wall.

Pandora's Box

This carpenter's box is so funky.... with its unusual proportions and added embellishments. The two useless, decorative knobs added to the front face, give the suggestion of a pair of eyes. They almost wink at us in an irresistable invitation to lift the lid. Then, there are the oversized, Eastlake, dangley handles and chunky bun feet, that all add up to a playful personality.

Once the risk is taken and any old box opened, it sometimes reveals old papers, treasures, souvenirs and who-knows-what. But antique boxes are never empty. There is always the lingering scent of contents past and little hintings of secrets. I think that, just maybe, Pandora knew what she was doing.

After unloading the container last Tuesday, we took a breath, and upon opening on Thursday, we realized we could have used even more fresh merchandise. A number of familiar faces showed up to get the "best pickings" for their shops or homes. It seemed like zinc-top tables and zinc wirework furniture (old school lockers, shelves, racks) were the hottest items. Even the little plant pots (see photo) are zinc. We just love this material. It's serious, yet soft in color and feel and, we think, "modern with a heart". Can't wait to go and unearth more of these pieces, which generally date to the 1950's. They are quirky, useful and best of all.............affordable.
